This book presents an effective approach for establishing or refining a workplace drug-testing program.
Abstract
The discussion advises that drug testing must be accompanied by a broader company drug policy which states that on-the-job drug use, possession, and distribution of illegal drugs is forbidden. The policy must also specify employer actions against employees who violate drug policy. The recommended drug-testing procedure is drawn from the experiences of major corporations that have pioneered employee drug-testing. The policy description encompasses program development, employee education, and the collection and testing of specimens. Sample policies, procedures, consent forms, checklists, and training materials are included. Also explained are Federal drug-testing programs, especially for those employers regulated by the Department of Transportation. The differences between private-sector and Federal-sector practices are examined, with information provided on how an employer can continue to operate an existing drug-testing program while complying with recently announced Federal rules. The book also discusses the pros and cons of drug testing, the legal pitfalls, and the technology of urinalysis. Drug testing is presented as a key element of comprehensive workplace drug programs that include education, intervention, and rehabilitation. 60-item bibliography, selected glossary, and a subject index
