This book examines the broad contours of drug testing in the workplace in terms of research findings and perspectives.
Abstract
The 15 chapters are grouped into two parts: research findings (Part I) and perspectives on drug testing (Part II). Research findings are presented under the topics of drugs in the workplace, drug testing programs, legal issues, and other workplace programs. The two chapters that discuss perspectives on drug testing focus on labor union perspectives and sociological perspectives. Some of the issues addressed in the book are the costs of alcohol and drug use in the workplace, what drug testing can reveal about an employee, whether drug tests are accurate and reliable, the effectiveness of drug screening programs, and the consequences of drug testing in the workplace. Other topics discussed are how to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of testing, the legal implications of testing, alternative approaches that can be used in the workplace, labor union attitudes toward the various issues of drug testing, and the sociological implications of drug testing.
