This compendium of materials explains the Drug Use Forecasting System established by the National Institute of Justice and presents research results showing that 53 to 79 percent of 2,000 men arrested for serious offenses in 12 major United States cities between June and November 1987 tested positive for illicit drugs.
Abstract
Most of those tested were charged with such crimes as burglary, grand larceny, and assault. The forecasting program's purpose is to track drug use trends among urban defendants suspected of dangerous crimes. The system measures drug use in Manhattan, New York City, Washington, D.C., Orleans Parish (La.), San Diego County (Calif.), Marion County (Ind.), Maricopa County (Ariz.), Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Multnomah County (Oreg.). The materials packet also includes a summary of NIJ research regarding drug abuse and its relationships to crime, a description of the drug use forecasting program in Manhattan between 1984 and 1986, an analysis of drug use and pretrial crime in the District of Columbia, and research summaries on drug testing and drugs and crime.
