This study examined whether inmates' self-reported histories of drug use were related to their completion or failure in the Alabama shock incarceration program.
Abstract
The Alabama Boot Camp program is designed around a 12-step model and is intended to serve as a form of treatment for drug- and alcohol-abusing inmates. The analysis used here compared a group of 50 prisoners who completed the boot camp program, and 50 who failed to complete the program. Data from the inmate surveys were supplemented by information from their prison files. The study results show that, contrary to the hypothesis, drug use and boot camp completion or failure were not correlated. Furthermore, level of drug use did not influence the rate of participant program completion or program failure. 1 table and 8 references
