Abstract
The introduction to the book makes a distinction between drug abuse and drug dependence and examines designer drug use, drug-seeking behavior, intoxication, tolerance, withdrawal, drug legalization, and drug administration methods. Subsequent chapters deal with opioids, marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, ecstasy, LSD, phencyclidine, volatile substance abuse, performance-enhancing drugs, prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, plants, alkyl nitrites, and smart drugs. Other chapters focus on drug abuse by specific patient groups, drug abuse and concurrent illness, and drug abuse during pregnancy and breast feeding. Appendixes include guidelines on needle exchange schemes and on the preparation of heroin reefers, along with a glossary of street drug names and sources of further information.
