Abstract
Chapter 1 presents information on drug dependence, chemotherapy, receptor site theory, brand names and generic names, and the most widely used drugs. Chapter 2 discusses where drugs come from, including plants, illicit drugs from plant sources, animal sources, gene splicing, and test tube. Federal laws concerning drugs are discussed in Chapter 3, focusing on the Food and Drug Administration, the New Drug Application, teratogens, quackery, cancer therapy, and penalties for illicit use of controlled drugs. Chapter 4 describes what happens after drug ingestion, including routes of drug administration, dosage forms, metabolism, drug interactions, women’s health, and drugs in the diet. In Chapter 5, synapse is discussed along with transmitters, response to stress, and serotonin. Narcotic analgesics, such as opiates and opioids, are described in Chapter 6. Chapter 7 provides the history and dangers of cocaine, amphetamines, caffeine, strychnine, and nicotine. Chapter 8 discusses barbiturates, Chapter 9 alcohol, Chapter 10 tranquilizers, and Chapter 11 marijuana. In Chapter 12 hallucinogens, street drugs, and designer drugs, are described. Chapter 13 discusses the birth control pill and oral contraceptives for men. Chapter 14 presents information on non-narcotic pain relievers such as aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, ketoprofen, and fenoprofen. Chapter 15 discusses additional drugs and chemicals, such as sleep aids, cold medicines, cough remedies, antacids, antibiotics, laxatives, acne treatments, dandruff, mouth rinse, and diet aids. Chapter 16 focuses on methods of personal drug testing, and drug testing in the workplace and at home. Chapter 17 discusses drugs in sports. 4 appendices, index
