Abstract
In testimony before the Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, a former official of the Nicaraguan government provides information on that government's involvement in drug trafficking to support South American terrorist groups. Paul Henze, a former National Security Council officer and current resident consultant for the Rand Corp., describes the Soviet Union's use of surrogate Bulgaria to support terrorism in Turkey and Italy largely through efforts supported by Bulgarian drug trafficking. Ferdinando Imposimato, an investigative judge in Italy, testifies on the connection between drug trafficking and terrorism in Italy, and representatives from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Customs Service, and the Justice Department offer evidence of the link between drug trafficking and terrorism in and through Cuba, Bulgaria, Nicaragua, Peru, and Colombia. A paper prepared by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration documents Bulgaria's involvement in international narcotics trafficking.
