THE AUTHOR REVIEWS THE DANGERS OF ALLOWING PERSONS RECEIVING LARGE DOSES OF TRANQUILIZERS TO OPERATE A MOTOR VEHICLE, AND DISCUSSES THE DIFFICULTIES IN DETERMINING WHEN PERSONS ARE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THESE DRUGS.
Abstract
WHILE RECOGNIZING THAT TRANQUALIZERS ARE AN EXTREMELY USEFUL MEDICAL TOOL IN THE TREATMENT OF EMOTIONALLY AND MENTALLY DISTURBED PERSONS, THE AUTHOR QUESTIONS THE ADVISABILITY OF ALLOWING PERSONS RECEIVING THIS MEDICATION TO OPERATE A MOTOR VEHICLE. THE PHYSICAL EFFECTS THAT TRANQUILIZING DRUGS PRODUCE ARE OUTLINED, AND THE POTENTIAL DANGERS OF THESE EFFECTS ARE DISCUSSED. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT EITHER NEW AND LESS POTENT DRUGS BE USED TO TREAT THESE PERSONS OR THAT THEIR DRIVING PRIVILEGE BE REVOKED WHILE THEY ARE UNDER THESE MEDICATIONS.
