Abstract
Articles on drug policy focus on such issues as drug legalization, the effectiveness of the "war on drugs," and the use of marijuana as medicine. Issues in drug law enforcement are discussed in a number of articles that address both domestic and international efforts; topics include China's efforts to counter the drug trade, narcotics control in Asia, innovative approaches to the drug problem in Europe, and efforts to fight drug dealing by U.S. gangs. Articles related to drug trafficking encompass the threat of international drug trafficking, the Cuban connection in international drug trafficking, cocaine trafficking in the United States, Mexico as a source of drug trafficking, and drug trafficking in Bolivia. Some articles on drug-use detection consider drug-testing in the workplace and court support for the drug testing of student athletes. A number of articles deal with the effects of various drugs and the characteristics and dynamics of drug dependence. Articles on drug prevention review the characteristics and effectiveness of various types of prevention programs, such as Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), the effectiveness of the "Just Say No" campaign, and the failure of drug education. Articles on the treatment of drug abuse and addiction consider both drug treatment in general and the treatment for the abuse of particular types of drugs. Other articles address the children of crack users and the seeds of "narco-democracy" in Mexico. A Cross Reference Guide covers topics discussed in all volumes of the Social Issues Resources Series from 1991 through 1997.
