After noting the unpredictability and dangerousness of intoxicated persons with whom police must deal, this article provides information on how to identify and manage such persons.
Abstract
Drunks are dangerous because they are inherently unpredictable. There is much officers can do to control the encounter and reduce the risk of injury or death. The first step is to ascertain the mental state of the subject so as to plan tactics and techniques accordingly. This article lists a number of signs of intoxication from drugs or alcohol. Officers must also be aware, however, that the typical signs of intoxication can also be symptoms of a number of illnesses, injuries, and medical conditions. The only way to safely and responsibly handle such subjects is to summon paramedics to the scene immediately. As the officer collects information, the subject should be kept under close observation in case his/her condition deteriorates. To further confirm the field diagnosis that a subject is intoxicated, a number of chemical tests to determine blood- alcohol level can be administered. This article briefly describes these tests. When dealing with an individual suspected of being intoxicated, a backup officer should be present.
