This document presents pictures and descriptions of the courthouses and other buildings that received awards in the 1997-98 DuPont Benedictus Awards program, an international architectural awards program to recognize the innovative use of laminated glass in outstanding architectural projects.
Abstract
The awards program included a professional awards program for residential and commercial structures and a student competition to design a courthouse. The courthouses could range in side from 3,000 to 5,000 net square meters. Design issues included accessibility to the public, people with physical and sensory impairments, economically disadvantaged persons, elderly persons, and persons who do not speak English; security from external and internal threats; and sustainability as well as the ability to accommodate change. Other issues included circulation and zoning to reflect a hierarchy of functional areas. The awards were based on an elegant and creative use of laminated glass with DuPont Butacite, a degree of innovation, and ability to integrate functional aspects of the program in an appropriate manner, a successful integration of the facility into the surrounding context, and an ability to integrate mechanical and electrical systems creatively.
