Key statistics and figures on the Dutch criminal justice system are presented that cover victimization, police operations, judicial statistics, and detention.
Abstract
The statistics demonstrate that the Dutch prison system is under pressure to build new facilities because of a steady increase in victimization in recent years and a trend toward more serious crimes. Furthermore, prosecutors have new options in the way they handle cases that result in a decline in case dismissals and a moderate decrease in fine rates. While the detention rate has not changed, the trend toward increasing serious and international crimes is reflected in the larger numbers of longer detentions. Although the number of juvenile suspects has been declining recently, increasing juvenile involvement in more serious crimes and large influxes of immigrant children are two trends that bear close attention. 16 tables, 26 figures, and 1 appendix
