Solving the drunk driving problem in New York State will require changes in public attitudes toward drinking and driving, as well as administrative policy changes.
Abstract
A task force of concerned citizens, criminal justice professionals, and treatment specialists devised a program to reduce the incidence and tragic consequences of drunk driving in the State. The campaign against drunk driving aims to increase the number of drinking drivers apprehended and the severity of penalties imposed. Police are to set up systematic traffic checkpoints to identify drunk drivers, and standard written depositions are to be developed to serve as evidence in court and administrative adjudication proceedings. Public information campaigns, improved automobile safety devices, and effective evaluation and treatment programs are other components of the program. An appendix lists task force members.
