This report examines selected characteristics of driving while intoxicated and related felony offenses in New York from 1978 through 1990.
Abstract
Results revealed that the number of second-offense commitments to prison for driving while intoxicated have increased every year since 1978 and have risen from 15 in 1978 to 217 in 1990. This still accounts for less than 1 percent of the commitments to New York State prisons for 1990. In addition, the number of offenders committed to the State Department of Correctional Services for offenses related to drunk driving reached an all-time high of 47 in 1990. Furthermore, offenders convicted for drunk driving are much more likely than other offenders to be white, committed from rural upstate counties, and older than other incarcerated offenders.
