The thanatology program at Somers Correctional Institution, a maximum security prison in Connecticut, is designed to allow terminally ill inmates and their families to share emotions, accept death, and live in a quality life.
Abstract
This book discusses many aspects of death and dying, particularly those specific to inmates. The thanatology program at Somers stresses the religious and spiritual aspects of dying and works with dying inmates to help them cope with their feelings and to solve the psychological and emotional problems that accompany a terminal illness. Program staff help the inmates prepare for death, support their families, and provide bereavement counseling. This type of program is particularly relevant as more inmates become infected with the HIV virus. 1 appendix
