This paper examined the increase in economic crimes and its impact on the Korean national economy from the rise in economic growth and development over the past 50 years.

Abstract

For over 50 years, Korea has been a free democratic republic and has made enormous strides in economic development and growth. However, with this economic development came large-scale economic crimes. Along with these crimes comes various socio-economic problems jeopardizing domestic financial systems. This paper presented in 1998 at the UNAFEI, 110th International Training Course on “Effective Countermeasures Against Economic Crime and Computer Crime” examined the increase in economic crime in Korea and its impact on the Korean national economy. It focused on the economic crimes in Korea, major cases of economic crime, major control structures for economic crimes, problems in suppressing economic crimes, and effective countermeasure against economic crime. Appendices included major economic crime cases (violations of major economy-related laws) and a number of cases of fraud, embezzlement, and breach of trust involving damages of W1 million ($700) or more.
