The approximately 450 refernces cited in this bibliography address crime and the criminal justice system from the economic perspective, with attention to operating costs, cost-benefit analysis, economic factors affecting crime, and crime costs.
Abstract
Included in the bibliography are books, journal articles, monographs, and government reports published between the late 1950's and 1981. An overview of the role of economic theory in criminology comments that the new criminological realists recognize the perpetual existence of crime and deviance and focus on the need to manage crime effectively by minimizing its costs to society. References which discuss economic issues in the criminal justice system are first presented, followed by separate sections on law enforcement, corrections, and crime rates. Other topics covered in the bibliography are white-collar crime, juvenile delinquency, the impact of economic factors such as unemployment on crime, drug abuse, organized crime, and property crime. References regarding cost-benefit analysis of law enforcement and correctional programs are provided, as is a list of other bibliographies. Availability and pricing information are not given.
