This video portrays the effects and dangers of teen use of the drug ecstasy, using comments from teen users of the drug as well as information provided by drug authorities.
Abstract
Youth who have used ecstasy note that this drug is accessible and frequently used in the clubs where youth gather for dancing and drinking. Peer pressure and acceptance was the dominant explanation for the use of ecstasy. Authorities on the effects of ecstasy advise that it is a stimulant that increases the heart rate to the extent of increasing blood pressure. In some instances this has led to stroke. Further, ecstasy stimulates brain chemicals that produce a feeling of well-being and happiness; however, drug experts advise that ecstasy can diminish the normal effect of these brain chemicals, such that when the influence of ecstasy has diminished, users may experience depression and extreme sadness. This leads to a dependence on the drug to produce the desired mental states. In commenting on their experiences from using ecstasy, youth note depression, dependence, diversion from goal-oriented behaviors, and frightening experiences when combined with the use of other drugs, and theft to pay for drug use. The video is not only a warning about the dangerous effects of ecstasy, but is also a warning that the use of ecstasy may involve them in law violations and arrest. Advice is offered on how to help a friend who is experiencing the bad effects of ecstasy and on the importance of resisting friends who offer the drug. Hot line phone numbers are provided.
