Several strategies are available to public schools to provide information and education to children and adolescents about AIDS prevention and the promotion of healthier lives.
Abstract
Schools should recognize their pivotal role in understanding and preventing the HIV epidemic and should initiate their efforts by establishing policies regarding HIV-positive children in the classroom and other issues. An HIV education program should be developed in the context of prevailing community and family values and in cooperation with parents, educators, and others. HIV education should begin as early as possible, continue throughout the entire course of schooling, and be integrated into a variety of related curricular content areas. In addition, teachers should receive adequate training. The education should be developmentally appropriate and should foster an understanding of body integrity and positive health promotion. It should also encourage responsible decisionmaking and should include a method for evaluating its effectiveness. 8 references.
