Police education and training are discussed in 15 articles by police officers, trainers, and educators.
Abstract
Topics range from formal university programs to police academies to field training within police departments. Also included is the use of television in training. A graduate education program in forensic science at Virginia Commonwealth University is described. Alternative means toward achieving a university degree are also outlined. One article discusses the development of a new training program at the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy; this program offers detectives standardized, basic, intermediate, and advanced generalized training. Training programs for dealing with terrorism are described, as well as the development of a comprehensive selection and training program for the police department in Montclair, N.J. Other articles note a strong demand for cost-effective training in the management of high-risk incidents; functional specifications of a computer-based multimedia training system for criminal justice and other government needs in Alberta, Canada; and the development of Project ACTION (Area Communications Television Information Operation Network), a low-power microwave live television communication system for police in the Tidewater area of Virginia.
