This paper outlines the educational program of a young offenders' prison in Ireland.
Abstract
Education is central to the overall program of the prison, which aims, as far as possible, to offer the same or similar educational opportunities as those offered in the community. Most of the prisoners would have left school between 9 and 14 years of age and their attendance and attitudes towards school would have been poor. Central to the prison's program is mutual respect between student and teacher, and awareness that successful learning takes place where the student is most motivated. The curriculum contains approximately 20 subjects, including: literacy; English at various levels; home economics (cookery, budgeting, and sewing skills); art and crafts; IT skills; music; woodwork; creative writing; anger management; and pre-release courses. The prison also offers post release courses to assist ex-offenders in finding work and training programs, educational support, and help with housing advice and drug and alcohol issues. The prison also offers "The Club," a parent and family support group that meets weekly to discuss everyday issues and problems or, occasionally, to attend an address by a hired speaker on such topics as stress management, relaxation techniques, and assertiveness.
