TO BE USED AS A STUDENT WORKBOOK IN A WORKSHOP, TEXT HELPS STUDENTS TO EXAMINE THEIR ATTITUDES, DEFINITIONS, BIASES, AND LIMITED PERSPECTIVES ABOUT CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS.
Abstract
THIS WORKBOOK IS ONE OF FIVE WORKSHOPS DESIGNED TO STIMULATE DISCUSSION ABOUT THE CAUSES OF CRIME AND SOCIETY'S RESPONSES TO IT. THIS PRESENTATION CONSISTS OF EXERCISES DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO EXAMINE THEIR ATTITUDES ABOUT A VARIETY OF SPECIFIC CRIMES AND CLASSES OF CRIMES AND THEIR CONSEQUENCES FOR VICTIMS. THE FIRST EXERCISE CONSISTS OF RANKING 16 CRIMES ACCORDING TO SERIOUSNESS AS THE STUDENT BELIEVES THE 'PUBLIC' RANKS EACH ONE AND AS THE STUDENT HIMSELF RANKS EACH CRIME. IN THE SECOND EXERCISE, VARIOUS CATEGORIES OF CRIME ARE DEFINED, AND THE STUDENT IS ASKED TO INDICATE THE PERCEIVED ARREST AND IMPRISONMENT RATE FOR EACH CATEGORY OF CRIME. THE THIRD EXERCISE IS A MULTIPLE CHOICE QUIZ DESIGNED TO DISCUSS FACTS THAT WILL EXPOSE PREVALENT MYTHS ABOUT CRIME. A SUGGESTED PLAN FOR SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION OF THE EXERCISES IS INCLUDED. (RCB)
