This document describes the Edward Byrne Memorial State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance Program.
Abstract
Through the Byrne Program, the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) works in partnership with State and local governments on crime and violence prevention, making communities safe and improving criminal justice systems. The Byrne Program, created by the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988 (Public Law 100-690), emphasizes controlling violent and drug-related crime and serious offenders and fosters multijurisdictional and multistate efforts to support national drug-control priorities. The BJA awards discretionary Byrne Program funds directly to public and private agencies and private nonprofit organizations and awards formula funds to the States, which then make sub-awards to State and local units of government. This fact sheet describes: (1) the Discretionary Grant Program; (2) the Formula Grant Program; (3) Formula Grant Program Allocation of Funds (Fiscal Year 1999 Allocation and Percentage to be Passed Through to Local Jurisdictions); (4) Legislatively Authorized Byrne Program Purposes; and (5) Program Evaluation.
