The purpose of this note is to determine the effect of prior record upon the relationship between sex and sentencing for a sample of male-female co-defendants adjudicated in a felony court over a six-year period.
Abstract
The findings show that as the criminal backgrounds of the co-defendants become more similar, the percentages of co-defendants receiving the same dispositions increase to the extent that there are no statistically significant differences in the mean dispositions of co-defendants with similar prior records or no prior records at all. However, when there are differences in the dispositions of male-female pairs, the female generally receives the milder disposition. (Author abstract)
