This article suggests that changes in the correctional environment demand a new style of leadership, and discusses some of the characteristics that correctional managers must possess to be effective leaders in the 21st century.
Abstract
As the workplace changes in correctional agencies, the nature of correctional leadership must also change to keep pace. Effective correctional leaders must be visionary, continual learners, adaptable, creative, and people-focused. Correctional leaders must have a clear picture of the future and understand the goals and objectives of corrections. The rapidity of change requires correctional leaders to be involved in continual learning and to be adaptable. They must also develop an organizational culture based on the proper vision and values, high performance expectations, communication, motivation, and confidence and trust in employees. In addition, effective correctional leaders must involve employees in the decision-making process as corrections moves into the 21st century. 12 references
