Because over half of American youth report some experience with an illicit drug prior to graduating from high school, over a third have tried a drug other than marijuana, and almost one-third of high school seniors have been stopped for drinking and driving, effective prevention, intervention, and treatment strategies are needed.
Abstract
The book details the scope of the youth drug and alcohol problem and discusses theories of drug and alcohol abuse. A systemwide model is presented that views the problem of substance abuse as involving all segments of the community. The model focuses exclusively on illegal drug and alcohol use by young persons, is anchored in the juvenile justice system, proposes approaches based on risk factors, and incorporates a facilitated planning process. Specific prevention, intervention, and treatment strategies include school-based curriculum, family-based, community-based, work-based, enforcement, prosecutorial, licensing, adjudication, supervision, and legislative strategies. Screening and client assessment are examined as well as resources for substance abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment.
