Tests have been conducted simulating non-collision related fires in vehicles. Ten vehicles, cars and trucks of varying manufacture and size from the year 1970 to 1980, were tested in two groups over a five year period.
Abstract
Attempts were made to ignite the vehicles in several different ways. Samples were taken from each vehicle both before and after the tests. In non-collision related fires that are not suppressed and where the vehicle is extensively damaged, there is probably little value in collecting samples from the vehicle for laboratory analysis by present methods. The analysis of debris for the presence of the elements lead, bromine and manganese is not recommended. However, the analysis of engine and transmission oil samples may be useful in evaluating the mechanical condition of a vehicle prior to a fire. (Publisher abstract)
