This manual presents the instrument used and the coding information for the variables in the data set resulting from an observation study of the nature of police behavior in handling disturbances and traffic stops in Denver.
Abstract
The data set contains data on 92 cases and 404 variables related to disturbance encounters and on 164 cases and 210 variables related to traffic stops. The variables for disturbances include the type of disturbance, manner of investigation, type of police response, situational variables, and demeanor of police toward participants. For traffic stops, the variables include the incident code, officer's description of the incident, the condition of the vehicle stopped, police contact with passengers of the vehicle, demeanor of the passengers and police, and resolution of the situation. The data were gathered between June and September 1982.
