This study compared aggression replacement training (ART), combined with token economy with relationally oriented treatment at four residential treatment units in a nonrandomized design.
Abstract
Results revealed there was no difference between those adolescents who had been at institutions where ART and token economy had been used and those that used relational treatment methods. Outcome was measured as weighted indices of sentences and police suspicion reports. The results show no difference between the treatment models. There was a substantial number of participants who were not sentenced for new crimes after discharge; this outcome suggests a distinction among three groups of adolescents: one group contains those who leave the antisocial life altogether, one group comprises those who continue to live on the verge of lawful life, and one group includes those who go into heavy criminality and end up in prison. Data were collected from institutions called “special approved homes” within the Swedish National Board of Institutional Care; 57 adolescents who were admitted to treatment wards at 4 youth institutions during a 2-year period participated in the study.
