This CD-Rom provides audiovisual instruction on three distinct topics: the effects of methamphetamine and the dangers of methamphetamine labs, identity theft, and domestic violence.
Abstract
The media for the instruction include an audiovisual presentation by an instructor coupled with slide outlines of the content being presented in the audiovisual lectures. Various computer-related tools are offered to facilitate instruction and the learning process. The course on methamphetamine begins with an overview of methamphetamine's effect on users. The instructor advises that meth users suffer the same addiction cycle and withdrawal reactions as crack cocaine users. Risky behaviors and health conditions fostered by meth use are identified. Paraphernalia and methods used to consume meth are visually depicted and labeled. Other topics covered are treatment methods and methods for investigating a methamphetamine enterprise. Attention is given to the dangers and problems posed by clandestine meth labs for public safety professionals and the community. The course on identity theft defines it and explains why identity theft is an attractive tool for organized crime groups in order to achieve anonymity in the course of committing many other types of crime. Methods of committing identity theft are described, and techniques local law enforcement agencies can use to investigate identity theft are recommended. The third course addresses aspects of domestic violence, otherwise known as intimate partner violence (IPV). Descriptions of types of IPV include not only physical violence, but also emotional and verbal abuse that inflicts severe mental harm on victims. Offender characteristics are identified, along with typical victim responses to IPV. Risk assessment for IPV cases focuses on signs that victims are at high risk for future severe injury and death. Recommendations are offered for how to increase victim safety from future attacks and abuse.
