The study applies meta-analysis to previous research findings related to the effectiveness of hospitalization in the treatment of babies with nonorganic failure to thrive.
Abstract
It also examines methodological problems in the evaluation. The meta-analysis examined the effect of hospitalization on the physical growth patterns and the psychological development of the babies. It was found that hospitalization enhanced the probability that nonorganic failure to thrive children would experience compensatory physical growth, yet hospitalization was not found to be effective in stimulating their psychological development. The meta-analysis shows that a prospective longitudinal study of the effectiveness of treating nonorganic failure to thrive children is needed. 28 references. 2 tables. (Author abstract modified)
