This is the summary of a workshop on "Elder Abuse and Its Prevention," which was convened in April 2013 by the Institute of Medicine's Forum on Global Violence Prevention for the purpose of exploring elder abuse around the world, focusing on its impacts on individuals, families, communities, and societies.
Abstract
The workshop also addressed occurrences and co-occurrences of various types of elder abuse, including sexual, emotional, and financial, as well as neglect. Workshop themes note that as the world population of adults aged 65 and older continues to grow, the implications of elder maltreatment for health care, social welfare, justice, and financial systems are great; however, despite the magnitude of global elder maltreatment and its impact on victims, it has been an underappreciated public health threat. After reviewing the prevalence, nature, and impacts of elder abuse, the workshop identified and described promising global and multisectoral evidence-based approaches to the prevention of elder maltreatment. Workshop discussions addressed how to improve prevention, intervention, and mitigation of victims' needs, with an emphasis on collaborative efforts of public and private agencies and organizations. The workshops considered innovative intervention models and prevention efforts across sectors and settings. The second part of the report contains submitted papers from speakers on the nature of work in countering elder abuse in various parts of the world. Appendixes contain additional information on the agenda and participants.
