The seven modules of this DVD constitute continuing education for community corrections professionals, in order to prepare them to recognize and respond appropriately to the abuse of elderly persons in the course of their work.
Abstract
Upon completing this 6-hour electronic instruction and scoring at least 80 percent on the test at the conclusion of the course, the student may request a certificate from the American Probation and Parole Association indicating completion of 6 hours of contact continuing education. Module 1, "Discovering a Hidden Problem," assists the student in gaining an awareness of elder abuse and the importance of taking a proactive approach in identifying and responding to it. Module 2, "Recognizing Elder Abuse," prepares students to recognize various types of elder abuse and their impacts on elderly victims. Module 3, "Understanding Victims of Elder Abuse," focuses on the effects of elder abuse on victims, reasons why victims may be reluctant to report their abuse to police, and factors in various cultures and subcultures that may influence how victims respond to their abuse. Module 4, "Communicating with Elder Victims," enables students to become proficient in communicating with victims of elder abuse. Students will learn communication strategies that are generally effective with elderly victims, questions that should be asked, and guidelines for responding in the course of interactive conversations. Module 5, "Identifying, Assessing, and Supervising Elder Abuse Offenders," instructs students in recognizing factors that may indicate elder abuse is occurring and provides guidance in intervening appropriately with identified offenders. Module 6, "Legal Issues for Community Corrections Professionals Regarding Elder Abuse," provides information on elder abuse statutes and reporting requirements. Module 7, "Collaboration and Professional Obligations," emphasizes cooperating with victim service and protection agencies in being attentive to and responding appropriately to elder abuse.
