This book contains readings on elder abuse around the world.
Abstract
Authors address the following topics: (1) the definition of elder abuse; (2) the extent of the problem; (3) causes of the problem, as related to values and practices; (4) societal attitudes regarding the existence of the problem; (5) private and public efforts to prevent the problem, to detect the existence of the problem, and intervene once the problem has occurred; and (6) policies developed to combat the problem. Individual chapters concern elder abuse and neglect in Australia, Finland, Greece, Hong Kong, Israel, India, Ireland, Norway, Poland, and South Africa. There is a chapter on common and unique themes on elder abuse from a world-wide perspective. This chapter also includes major explanations for elder abuse: (1) Dependency: physical, economic, social; (2) Economic Conditions; and (3) Cultural Changes.
