The establishment of an elder abuse resource center in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in 1990 was the culmination of more than 10 years of work by the local professional community.
Abstract
Developed as a 3-year demonstration project, the center's primary goal is to focus and coordinate existing services for elder abuse victims and their families. Services provided by the center include counseling, information and referral, followup, consultation with other agencies, professional training, public awareness, research and data collection, and volunteer support. The center has four paid staff (project coordinator, counselor, education and volunteer services coordinator, and office manager) and 28 trained volunteers. Clients include men and women 60 years of age and older who live in private residences in the community and who are being abused by those with whom they share a trust or kinship relationship. Between September 1990 and September 1992, 244 cases of abuse and neglect had been reported to the center. More than 80 percent of the victims were women who ranged in age from 60 to 85 years. The center's multidisciplinary intervention team consists of a family physician, two attorneys, a police officer, a financial manager/estate planner, a nurse/case coordinator, a hospital social worker, and a counselor. Intervention approaches used at the center, multidisciplinary teams and therapeutic support groups, are described. 9 references
