THIS PAPER EXPLORES THE ELDERLY AS VICTIMS OF CRIME AND GENERATES A THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVE FOR UNDERSTANDING THEIR VICTIMIZATION.
Abstract
THE PAPER REVIEWS THE TYPES OF CRIMES COMMITTED AGAINST THE ELDERLY, THE OFFENDER WHO COMMITS THEM, WHY THE ELDERLY ARE SELECTED AS VICTIMS, AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR VICTIMIZATION. AS A RESULT OF RESEARCH FINDINGS, THE STUDY CONCLUDES THAT THE ELDERLY'S VICTIMIZATION MAY OR MAY NOT INCREASE IN COMPARISON TO OTHER AGE GROUPS BECAUSE OF VARIOUS FACTORS. THESE FACTORS SUGGEST A GENERAL HYPOTHESIS ON ENVIRONMENTAL, ECONOMIC, PHYSICAL, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL VULNERABILITY. SIMILARLY, SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE FOR REDUCING THE ELDERLY'S VULNERABILITY AND THUS MINIMIZING THE EFFECT OF CRIME IN KANSAS CITY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
