THIS SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL UNIT PRESENTS OPERATORS OF EMERGENCY VEHICLES WITH INFORMATION NEEDED TO PREDICT POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS DRIVING SITUATIONS AS WELL AS TO DECIDE UPON THE PROPER COURSE OF ACTION.
Abstract
THE COURSE INCLUDES INFORMATION ON THE PROBABILITY OF A COLLISION UNDER VARIED CIRCUMSTANCES AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF SUCH COLLISIONS. IT AIMS TO HELP THE STUDENT IDENTIFY THE PROCEDURES FOR PREDICTING THE PROBABILITY OF HAZARDS, WAYS TO MINIMIZE A SINGLE HAZARD, AND THE CONCEPT OF SEPARATING TWO OR MORE HAZARDS, AS WELL AS DEVELOP SKILLS OF COMPROMISING IN REAL-WORLD DRIVING SITUATIONS. HAZARDOUS DRIVING SITUATIONS NOTED INVOLVE EXPRESSWAYS, INTERSECTIONS, LEFT TURNS, AND EXIT RAMPS. THE DISCUSSION OF DRIVER DECISIONMAKING TAKES INTO ACCOUNT TIME-DISTANCE-SPEED RELATIONSHIPS. QUESTIONS WITH ANSWER KEYS FOLLOW EACH SECTION. ILLUSTRATIONS ARE INCLUDED. FOR RELATED DOCUMENTS, SEE NCJ 67969-71.
