THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE ESTABLISHMENT, CHARACTER, AND OBJECTIVES OF INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ABIDUAN IN IVORY COAST, AND CONSIDERS THE PROSPECTS OF EMPLOYMENT OF ITS GRADUATES.
Abstract
UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE UNITED NATIONS AND WITH THE HELP OF UNESCO AND THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF CRIMINOLOGY, AN INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY WAS ESTABLISHED TO SERVE FRENCH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES SOUTH OF THE SAHARA, AS WELL AS MADAGASCAR. SINCE DECEMBER, 1969, THE INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY HAS FUNCTIONED WITHIN THE UNIVERSITY OF ABIDUAN, HAVING THE STATUS OF A UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE. THE AIM OF THE INSTITUTE IS TO PROVIDE APPROPRIATE SUPPLEMENTARY TRAINING FOR JUDGES AND OFFICIALS OF THE GENDARMERIE AND THE POLICE; PENITENTIARY AND REFORM SCHOOL ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF; WORKERS IN THE SOCIAL SERVICES; AND MORE GENERALLY, PERSONS WHO ARE TO ASSUME DUTIES RELEVANT TO THE PREVENTION OF CRIME AND THE TREATMENT OF OFFENDERS. WHILE THE AUTHOR, PRESIDENT OF THE SUPREME COURT OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE IVORY COAST, ACKNOWLEDGES THAT MANY DEVELOPING COUNTRIES, WITH ECONOMIC PRIORITIES DIRECTED TOWARD REDUCING PUBLIC EXPENDITURE, CANNOT OR CHOOSE NOT TO SUPPORT A SOPHISTICATED CRIMINAL JUSTICE PERSONNEL, THE NEED IS THERE AND TRAINED PERSONNEL MUST BE AVAILABLE...RCB
