This manual presents the methodology, file structure, codebook information, data collection forms, offense definitions, and a descriptive summary for a study of the effectiveness of employment programs for recent prison releasees in Boston, Chicago, and San Diego.
Abstract
The study, covering 1981-1984, tested whether job counseling and placement services, accompanied by intensive followup after job placement, would significantly increase the effectiveness of the employment programs. Data were collected on personal, criminal, and employment backgrounds. Information also covered the type, duration, and pay of previous employment; living arrangements; marital status; criminal history; and characteristics of the employment placement. A random sample of 305 cases was drawn from a universe of offenders released from Federal, State, or local adult correctional facilities in Massachusetts, California, and Illinois. Appended data collection forms and definitions of offenses included and excluded from analyses.
