In February 1992, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development hosted the National Youth Initiatives Summit, which brought together resident, youth, and civic leaders from around the country to discuss innovative approaches to locally based programs and prescribe solutions to the crises in American public housing.
Abstract
Following transcripts of the welcome address, observations from the Youth Panel, and opening sessions, this booklet presents the findings and recommendations of the working groups, which covered security, health, families, education, youth sports and recreation, and job skills and opportunities. Each working group pointed to models of success in their field and recommended specific actions for police, residents of the community, and housing authorities. City groups from Philadelphia, the District of Columbia, Chicago, St. Louis, New York, Boston, and other cities discussed ways to improve services at public housing developments and provided samples of local initiatives.
