DEFINITIONS, EXPLANATIONS, DIAGRAMS, AND OTHER INFORMATION IN THE AREA OF EXPLOSIVES ARE PRESENTED; THIS VOLUME CONTAINS ALPHABETICAL ENTRIES BETWEEN 'DETONATION' AND 'DETONATORS.'
Abstract
THE ENCYCLOPEDIA COVERS THE FOLLOWING ITEMS: (1) MILITARY AND INDUSTRIAL EXPLOSIVES, EXPLOSIVE COMPOSITIONS, PROPELLANTS, AND PYROTECHNIC COMPOSITIONS; (2) EXPLOSIVES AND EXPLOSIVE COMPOSITIONS WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN USED FOR MILITARY OR INDUSTRIAL PURPOSES; (3) ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES FOR THE MORE COMMON EXPLOSIVES, PROPELLANTS, AND PYROTECHNIC COMPOSITIONS; (4) COMPOUNDS WHICH DEFLAGRATE OR MAY POSSIBLY EXPLODE BECAUSE OF THE PRESENCE OF PLOSOPHORIC GROUPS; (5) AMMUNITION ITEMS, SUCH AS PROJECTILES, BOMBS, GRENADES, DETONATORS, AND FUSES; (6) CALIBERS OF WEAPONS AND PROJECTILES USED IN THE U.S. AND FOREIGN COUNTRIES; (7) BRIEF DEFINITIONS OF ORDINANCE TERMS; AND (8) NAMES OF SCIENTISTS WHO HAVE MADE IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE FIELDS OF EXPLOSIVES, AMMUNITION, AND WEAPONS. LISTS ARE PROVIDED WHICH SUPPLEMENT THOSE GIVEN IN VOLUMES 1,2, AND 3 OF THE ENCYCLOPEDIA; THESE CONTAIN ABBREVIATIONS, CODE NAMES, AND SYMBOLS USED; ABBREVIATIONS FOR BOOKS AND PERIODICALS REFERENCED; AND BOOKS ON EXPLOSIVES AND PROPELLANTS. ALTERNATIVE NAMES OF CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS ARE CROSS-REFERENCED, AND IF A COMPOUND OR TEST IS DESCRIBED IN FOREIGN-LANGUAGE LITERATURE, ITS FOREIGN NAME IS GIVEN. TOPICS COVERED IN THIS VOLUME INCLUDE: EQUATIONS OF STATE IN DETONATION; EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES; HEATS OF DETONATION; DETONATION VELOCITY; DETONATORS, IGNITERS, PRIMERS, AND OTHER INITIATING DEVICES USED FOR MILITARY PURPOSES; BOMBS AND BOMB COMPONENTS; AND ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES FOR EXPLOSIVE COMPOSITIONS. LISTS OF TABLES, FIGURES, AND ILLUSTRATIONS ARE PROVIDED. FOR VOLUMES 1,2,3,5,6, AND 7, RESPECTIVELY, SEE NCJ 02852, 00601, 00600, AND 45095-45097. (VDA)
