Chapters on community responses to children of battered women address the characteristics of a violent culture, shelters and domestic violence programs, child protection and the criminal justice system, and prevention and education in schools and communities.
Abstract
The chapters are written by authors from across North America who are working in a variety of ways both to prevent future violence and intervene to lessen the effects that current violence has on children. The book begins with a discussion of how societies teach boys to view violence as acceptable behavior and how these teachings are maintained into adulthood. Part Two addresses shelters and domestic- violence counseling. Two chapters focus on individual assessment and counseling in cases of trauma. Three chapters in Part Two address work with children, their mothers, and their fathers. Part Three contains chapters on child protection issues when mothers are also battered women. One chapter outlines legal remedies for those working with battered women and their children to use when seeking protection from abusers. Another chapter provides an overview of assessment and intervention in child protection and examines some current controversies over the protection of children of battered women. The final section of the book addresses school and community efforts to prevent violence and educate people about it. Topics considered are violence- prevention programs in elementary and secondary schools, strategies to address violence in the lives of high-risk youth, and Aboriginal Canadian children who witness and live with violence.
