Abstract
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), run by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, incorporates five elements in its commitment to reduce gun crime in America: partnerships, strategic planning, training, outreach, and accountability. This report examines the efforts and benefits of engaging community groups in the work of PSN. The report is divided into four sections that examine these areas: Why engage the Community? looks at who should be involved in PSN outreach efforts; Defining Community and the Role of Community Engagement in PSN looks at what roles community groups play in these efforts; Expanding Your Community's Engagement in PSN examines how community groups can become involved in PSN outreach; and Examples of Community Engagement in PSN discusses what benefits can be expected from engagement by community groups. Some examples of community engagement in PSN include: holding effective community forums; implementing other outreach approaches; involving criminal justice partners; engaging youth and families; collaborating with community and faith-based group; involving businesses and foundations; and engaging offender populations.
