This second volume of Community Epidemiology Work Group Proceedings for June 1986 contains papers related to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), drug abuse and crime, ethnographic research, and international research.
Abstract
Eleven papers address issues related to AIDS. One paper examines increasing mortality among intravenous narcotic users in New York City and its relationship to the AIDS epidemic. Other papers in this section address treating and coping with AIDS at Bellevue Hospital; approaches to treatment and coping with AIDS at a residential drug treatment program; approaches to treatment and coping with AIDS at a methadone maintenance program; pediatric AIDS; children of substance abusers; and AIDS prevention efforts. Other papers in this section focus on policy implications of AIDS and the AIDS intravenous substance abuser and pediatric issues. Four papers pertain to drug abuse and crime. One paper describes the features and effects of Operation Pressure Point, a law-enforcement saturation effort intended to remove drug addicts and dealers from the streets of New York City's Lower East Side. Other papers in this section discuss the relationship between drugs, crime, and violence; the epidemiology of adult crime and drugs; and the epidemiology of drugs among delinquents. The section on ethnographic research contains two papers. One profiles the Street Studies Research Unit, which was created in 1979 to provide information on the availability of drugs on the streets of New York City. The second paper reports on a study of coca and cocaine production in the Peruvian Amazon. Four papers are presented in the section on international research. They address the imprisonment of drug addicts and the process of dependence in France; a Dutch study of the background characteristics, drug-use, sex practices, and attitudes toward AIDS among needle-exchange intravenous (IV) drug users and street IV drug users; drug policy in Sweden; and drug use in Italy.
