This document presents a comprehensive evaluation of patrol vehicle tires.
Abstract
Tire evaluations were conducted under a variety of test conditions and the tires' performance compared in various categories. There was no overall winner or loser. Because driving conditions vary so widely throughout the country, individual agencies must identify the most suitable tires for their patrol vehicles. Three manufacturers submitted tires for evaluation: Firestone Aerofire, General XP-2000, and Goodyear Eagle GT+4. Each brand of tire was tested on a Ford Crown Victoria and a Chevrolet Caprice, which represent the vast majority of police cars and are the only full-size police package vehicles currently available. Test Objective, Test Methodology, and Formulas are given for: (1) Static Circle Test (Dry and Wet Pavement Surface); (2) Serpentine Test (Dry and Wet Pavement Surface); (3) Stopping Distance (Dry and Wet Pavement Surface); (4) High-Speed Handling; and (5) Tire Wear. Test results may be used to determine the tires that best meet the needs of specific departments, and to adjust the manufacturer's bid for these tire brands. Appendix
