This report presents the results of a preliminary study on means for reducing the consumption of petroleum products by police cars.
Abstract
Major emphasis was placed on an analysis of the adaptability and utility of automobiles that are smaller than those currently used by police agencies. Alternative measures that involve operating procedures and driving habits were also considered, and the potential benefits from applicable alternatives were assessed quantitatively. Results indicated that both the intermediate and compact cars have a far greater application than their current use would suggest. Therefore, strategies to overcome barriers to wider police use of such smaller vehicles are presented. Recommendations are also presented for training, a national evaluation center, studies to define vehicle specifications, a police vehicle information clearinghouse, guidelines and training for maintenance personnel, and a public relations program on reducing fuel consumption.
