This report describes the efforts of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to eliminate racism in all areas of operations, including personnel recruitment, selection, training, career development, employee participation in organizations that enhance professional growth, and in prisons.
Abstract
More than 50 percent of Ohio inmates are minorities, while 20 percent of employees are minorities. The Department has worked hard to increase minority recruitment, with an emphasis on recruiting job applicants willing to relocate to a correctional institution in an area with a low minority population. The Ohio Corrections Assessment Center includes a strong centralized recruitment component and provides a fair and equal opportunity for all applicants. More than 30 percent of the employees hired since January 1993 have been minorities. At least one of the three deputy wardens at each institution is a minority. The Department has dramatically increased diversity training for new and current employees. The Department has taken aspects in other areas of operations as well. Case examples and figures
