THIS BOOK ALERTS INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL MANAGEMENT TO THE INCREASING DANGERS OF ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL CRIME AND DEVIANCE, PARTICULARLY TERRORISM, AS WELL AS TO PROTECTIVE MEASURES.
Abstract
CONTINUING WITH THE MISSION OF AN EARLIER 1968 EDITION THAT WARNS OF THE POSSIBILITY OF ESPIONAGE AND SUBVERSION IN THE INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY, THE TEXT EXAMINES UNIQUE PROPERTIES OF HIGHLY INDUSTRIALIZED WESTERN COUNTRIES WHICH MAKE THEM ESPECIALLY VULNERABLE TO DEVIANCE AND TERRORIST ATTACK. IT BEGINS WITH A GENERAL SURVEY OF INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE, ITS OBJECTS, ETHICAL ARGUMENTS, LEGAL POSITION, AND INTERNATIONAL EXTENT, AND OF ITS PARENT ART, INTELLIGENCE. TECHNIQUES AND TECHNICAL AIDS (CAMERAS, RECONNAISSANCE PLANES, EAVESDROPPING DEVICES, TRANSMITTERS) ARE REVIEWED. ADDITIONALLY, CASE STUDIES OF INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE IN WESTERN EUROPE AND IN ENGLAND IN PARTICULAR ARE PRESENTED. FINALLY, THE CONTEMPORARY PHENOMENON OF TERRORISM IS CONSIDERED--A SPECIALIZED FORM OF SUBVERSION MARKED BY ITS INTERNATIONAL CHARACTER, LACK OF AN IDENTIFIABLE PERPETRATOR OR RESPONSIBLE INVESTIGATING AGENCY, AND STRONG INVOLVEMENT OF FEMALE ACTORS. THE HISTORY AND MOTIVATIONS OF THE FEMALE TERRORIST ARE THEN EXAMINED IN DETAIL. THE SECOND PORTION OF THE BOOK ADDRESSES DEFENSE MANAGEMENT, INCLUDING GENERAL AND DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION ON SECURITY, INTELLIGENCE AS A MANAGEMENT AID, PRINCIPLES OF DEFENSE MANAGEMENT, AND A THREE-PART MANAGEMENT DEFENSE SYSTEM. A BIBLIOGRAPHY AND EXCERPTS OF REPORTS AND PAPERS ON SUCH SUBJECTS AS INDIVIDUAL TERRORIST INCIDENTS, SYSTEMS FOR PROTECTION AND CLASSIFICATION, AND HISTORICAL EXAMPLES OF ESPIONAGE ARE PROVIDED. AN INDEX IS INCLUDED. (DAG)
