THE BASIC PHYSICAL, COST, PERSONNEL, EQUIPMENT, AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR ESTABLISHING A POLICE PHOTOGRAPHIC UNIT ARE REVIEWED, AND THE ADVANTAGES OF SUCH A UNIT ARE DISCUSSED.
Abstract
THE ADVANTAGES OF ESTABLISHING AN INTERNAL PHOTOGRAPHIC UNIT INSTEAD OF EMPLOYING NON-POLICE PHOTOGRAPHERS INCLUDE THE AVAILABILITY OF SERVICES, SECURITY, AND THE POLICE BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHER. AN INTERNAL UNIT CAN BE USED FOR SUCH PHOTOGRAPHIC SERVICES AS IDENTIFICATION, CRIME OR ACCIDENT SCENE PHOTOGRAPHY, SURVEILLANCE PHOTOGRAPHY, POLICE TRAINING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS, EVIDENCE PHOTOGRAPHY, AND PRODUCTION OF COURT EXHIBITS. PERSONNEL REQUIREMENTS AND THE MINIMUM TRAINING NECESSARY FOR A POLICE PHOTOGRAPHER ARE OUTLINED. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE ALSO PROVIDED ON THE SIZE AND TYPE OF FACILITIES, ON THE BASIC AND OPTIMUM PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT, AND ON THE COST RANGES FOR ESTABLISHING A PHOTOGRAPHIC UNIT.
