THE RESULTS OF THE FIRST PHASE OF A PROGRAM OF RESEARCH UNDERTAKEN TO ESTIMATE THE VOLUME AND PATTERN OF BOOKMAKING IN THE GREATER KANSAS CITY AREA ARE REPORTED. THE PURPOSE OF THE FIRST PHASE OF THE STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE WHETHER INDIVIDUALS CONTACTED IN A RANDOM SURVEY WOULD ANSWER QUESTIONS CONCERNING GAMBLING THEY MAY HAVE DONE, PARTICULARLY ANY BETTING WITH BOOKMAKERS; AND TO DRAW TENTATIVE CONCLUSIONS CONCERNING THE VALIDITY OF THE RESPONSES THAT WERE MADE TO THOSE QUESTIONS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PHASE OF THE STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE WHETHER PUBLIC COOPERATION WOULD BE SUCH AS TO SUPPORT THE UNDERTAKING IN THE FIRST PLACE. CONSIDERING THE SENSITIVE NATURE OF THE SUBJECTS THAT WERE INVOLVED IN THIS INQUIRY, THE DEGREE OF COOPERATION ATTAINED IS CONSIDERED TO HAVE BEEN HIGH, BOTH IN THE GENERAL SENSE OF PERSONS CONSENTING TO BE INTERVIEWED; AND IN THE SENSE OF THE QUESTIONS THEY ANSWERED, MANY OF WHICH WERE HIGHLY PERSONAL IN NATURE.
